How to be a Professional On-Air Personality!

"It's a book everyone in radio should read, especially newcomers to our industry." - Norm N. Nite

RADIO PRO was originally designed to be the story of one of America's most successful radio personalities, Joe Martelle.

The book would cover his adventurous forty-one year 'love affair' with radio! An on-air career which was jam packed with fun and excitement...and both highs and lows. An amazing journey that afforded Joe a whirlwind ride up and down and thankfully, back up again that elusive ladder of success.

Joe's fabulous career began at a small station in Maine, where he learned the radio ropes. After years of bouncing around from town to town and struggling to make it in the radio game, his door to success was finally opened to on-air positions in several 'major' markets; including 'all nights' at legendary, WLW in Cincinnati, known as the Nation's station. Later, his popularity soared to new heights at WROR in Boston where he enjoyed almost twenty years as host of the morning-drive show, solo and for ten years with his partner, the late Andy Moes. In addition to the AM-Drive slot, Joe also hosted for twelve years the all request show, 'Saturday Night 'Live' at the Oldies,' which became the most popular all request show in the history of Boston radio. His career also included on-air stays in Houston and West Palm Beach, Florida.

Joe's personal story is truly an exciting insight in to survival and success in the tough business of radio.

The exciting times, along with the many bitter disappointments of living the life of an on-air Radio Pro!

However, in writing his own saga, it didn't take Joe long to realize the real 'inside' story was more about How one becomes a successful on-air talent and less about himself. He also did not want the book to merely reflect his own feelings on how to make it in the fun but often volatile world of being on the radio. That's when he made the decision to reach out to a few real on-air radio pro's. He contacted popular New York air personalities, and long time friends, Cousin Brucie Morrow (who kindly offers one of three introductions for the book) Harry Harrison, one time morning-drive personality at three of the Big Apple's most popular radio stations, WMCA, WABC and CBS-FM. Their expertise and some never before told stories of How to be a successful on-air radio talent, led Joe to expand his search to even more qualified radio pro's. Super air talent, both past and present: Look for the name of one of your favorites radio personalities. Most likely, he or she is probably listed here...Mike Addams, Roger Allan, Malcolm Alter, Jean Ashley, Matt 'the cat' Baldassari, Tom Bergeron, Dick Biondi, Mary Blake, Don Bleu, Bruce Bradley, Ross Brittain, Jack Casey, Sean Casey, Joe Castiglione, 'Ron Chapman, Joe Cortese, Lissa Coffey, Capt. If, you're female and would like to 'shine' as an on-air radio pro, there's a special chapter on 'women on the air.' Wonderful comments from women who faced difficult odds to be highly successful in a business which is still dominated by men. Never before revealed input from radio pro's, like Nancy Widmann, the first woman President at CBS Inc; former radio personality, consultant and author Donna Halper, who shares her knowledge of 'making' it on the radio, as a female!

For old time radio buffs, RADIO PRO also features a chapter on radio's FIRST on-air radio pro's. As a youngster, growing up in the late 1940's and 50's, Joe Martelle was glued to his radio! He played the radio, not just to listen but to learn. His listening period transcended 'Radio's Golden Age' of great personalities and programs, like The Lone Ranger and Jack Benny...to the infancy days of rock n' roll and America's Top-40 Radio with personalities like Alan Freed, Dick Biondi (both covered in Radio Pro) to today's radio world of talk and news programming. Joe says quite proudly, "radio back then, like today is made up of words...and I was lucky enough to listen and learn from the masters of the airwaves...for free! What a stable of teachers, I was most fortunate to learn from...the 'one on one 'styles of Arthur Godfrey and Don McNeill to the genius that was Fred Allen, Jack Benny and so many others. I listened, learned and borrowed from radio's masters> Radio was my own private school and prepared me for my own successful forty-one years on the air."

If you're interested in how Joe Martelle sounded on the radio in Boston, back in the 1980's go to ... www.northeastairchecks.com  You'll find a few of his old 'airchecks' (programs) available on line to listen to.

Whatever your interest in radio, particularly those of you who desire to BE ON THE AIR, Radio Pro is the only book you'll need to read!
